Scrolls lay piled across the High Table and as usual, E'dian had his nose buried in them as usual. His fingers tapped absently beside the scrolls, klah forgotten in a mug nearby. A roll sat half eaten on a plate beside that. He broke out his concentration long enough to speak to his bronze. They really needed to widen patrols, he was worried about the reports of raids on the holds.
Xi, can you tell Myneth and Pantoth I need their riders down here please? A moment's pause and then a mental rumble and sense of warmth passed through the Weyrleader. Done. They should be on their way. Thank you my dear. Is Aliath well? She sleeps with her clutch.
More warmth passed through to the rider and E'dian couldn't help but smile. Their first clutch, it was a moment to be proud of. But as his father would say, don't count the eggs before they hatched. But with a bronze such as his Xialanth, it had to turn out well indeed. Especially with all the length Aliath had put on, E'dian was still turning over the idea of the beasts in his head.
Now where were those darn riders, why couldn't they move faster. Too bad the riders could not go between as their dragons could. E'dian sighed and his fingers resumed their tapping as he went back to studying the hide scrolls in front of him once more.

A'rik had been comfortably seated behind his desk in the Candidate Barracks. He had set his charges to a rousing day of herding duty. His last lesson had not gone as planned and he was dedicated to making the next one more successful. As he poured over the plans in front of him Pan piped up.
Xialanth's rider requests your presence. Oh? I suppose I should join him then. That would probably be for the best Somehow a sense of immense sarcasm coming from the brown. He had a funny sense of humor that way.
He rose and made his way through the hall. No matter how you put it, going to see E'dian always made A'rik feel like a candidate again. He couldn't for the life of him explain why. Once at the high table he announced himself with a cough. "Hello E'dian." He grinned at the Weyrsecond.

R'lec had actually been in the middle of oiling his bronze when the summons came. It was funny how something the mundane weyrling chore would never end. As riders and adults they changed so much from their younger selves.
But you still had to oil your dragon. Myneth, especially, was quite insistent.
So it wasn't until the last bit of oil had been rubbed into the molten bronze hide, and then off of his hands, that R'lec was told the message from his lifemate. R'lec and E'dian had never been friends, but since the flight things had been quite testy between the two. Nevertheless, he was not happy about the fact he was going to be late. Even if E'dian had been so pompous as to summon him via dragon.
This better be a promotion. Or, shards, maybe he got tired of the girl and wants to just hand her over to someone who can keep her in line. The thoughts comforted the bronze rider, even if his rational side knew it was probably something to do with wingdrills. E'dian was socially inept, but when it came to drills he was meticulous and...R'lec would never admit it...good at the logistics.
"You called?" R'lec's voice drifted into the room some minutes after A'rik's arrival. His eyes did a quick assessment of the scene. Those scrolls could be anything. A'rik, who had Impressed at the same time R'lec had, was a good enough man, for all that he was a brown rider. No threat there. He'd been made Candidate Master recently, if he remembered right. Well, someone had to deal with the brats.

The Weyrleader glanced up as A'rik made his presence known. Grey eyes met green ones and E'dian nodded, ah good. The Candidate Master was always on time, one thing to be said for the man, he had a strong sense of duty. E'dian offered for the stocky man to have a seat next to him. As he smoothed out the scrolls he began to explain just what it was he wanted.
Several minutes later R'lec actually showed up. E'dian lifted his head at Xialanth's prompting as the other bronze rider entered the Hall. When would that man step up to the plate? Maybe this would give him something constructive to do other than to drool all over Gaelle. The Weyrwoman really needed less distractions right about now. She had a lot of growing up to do and not nearly enough time to do it in. Sadly, the Weyr couldn't wait for Gaelle to grow up as any young girl should.
Nodding shortly to R'lec, E'dian gestured to a seat on the other side of A'rik. His mind flipped to the topic at hand. "Ah good. I need you two to fly patrol around Ponaa." He smoothed out the hide in front of him, an old, detailed map of Ponaa Weyr and Hold as well as the outlying cotholds which now lay empty. The Weyrleader tapped a couple of those small cotholds and huffed. "I've gotten a couple of... disturbing reports. It seems that there may be some holdless that have taken these small cots and are raiding Ponaa proper."
E'dian narrowed his eyes down at the hide then lifted his gaze to look over both riders measuringly. Of the adult riders in his Weyr, these two were oddly, the steadiest. Despite R'lec's pension for chasing women, E'dian rarely found fault in the man's work ethic. Though... he was oddly late today.
Myneth said he had to be oiled. It is very important. Nodding with understanding a very small smile hinted at the corner of E'dian's mouth. That bronze could be as demanding as a Queen when he wanted to. "A'rik, I need you to assign someone else to teach the candidates for the day. I need you both to keep this under wraps. I do not want this leaking. R'lec, if there is one more rider you trust, you could lead a small trio. Stay low, stay invisible. Check out these sights and no more, I don't want you two playing hero. Got it?"

An assignment? Well, at least it wasn't more drills.
R'lec cut through any response the brown rider was about to give. "Honestly, the less riders on this, the better. If this is supposed to be as quiet as possible." He glanced at A'rik. "You know what gossips there are here." Not that he was implying the man sitting with them had a tendency towards running their mouths. E'dian's problem was he probably didn't use his mouth enough. A'rik...who knew what kind of company that man kept. Besides kids, that is. Surely the young people they had for Candidates would notice the absence of their Master. If their Weyrleader wanted this thing so quiet, why hadn't he thought all of this through? "Unless A'rik needs the company?" He deferred to the brownrider.
He turned his mind, seriously now, the business at hand. It was obvious that E'dian did not want the two riders engaging if these so called ruffians were found...so this ride was purely...informative? What was the danger in that? The two, shards he could have done it himself, of them would be overly prepared for the glorified joy-flight.
"When do we leave?"

A'rik had been sitting quietly beside E'dian listening to what the man had summoned him for when R'lec joined the gathering. E'dian began again, explaining the nature of this meeting. He had hardly finished his plans when R'lec retorted.
"...Unless A'rik needs the company?" A'rik gave a subtle humph to the bronze riders comments. "Well if you were asking my opinion, I think a searchrider would be a handy accessory. Since we will be patrolling the surrounding area, who knows if we will run into any potentials on the way. J'sain or Estes could prove themselves useful." He rested his elbows on the table before him and glanced down at the spread of maps. He turned to E'dian.
"As for lessons, Master Paedan had been mentioning interest in facilitating a few lessons on basic dragon care. I think the kids would benefit from them, and it will free me from lessons for the day." He gave a small grin to R'lec. The man had thought him dull or simple. There was more the A'rik then met the eye. He wasn't about to let a smug bronze rider get the better of him.

The Weyrleader tapped the desk as he thought then nodded. J'sian had already proved he could keep his head down and mouth shut when it came to missions, that Estess though, she would probably tell the whole Weyr in a matter of minutes. E'dian rolled up the map and handed it to R'lec with a look that clearly emphasized he was to bring it back in the condition it left. Nodding once more to the Candidate Master.
"J'sian has already proved he can keep qiuet, he would not be a bad addition. Estess I would as soon keep here or the whole Weyr will know whats going on. Besides, adding a third would give you some practice R'lec." E'dian pulled the previously forgotten mug of klah to him and made a face when he discovered it had gone cold.
"Its up you two which way you shall have it. Just let Xialanth know, he shall keep in contact while you are out." The one really, major downside about being Weyrleader now, was all the talking E'dian had to do. He really hated talking this much, would that he could relay thoughts and words as efficiently as his dragon. It would save so much time and posturing.
"I am especially concerned about those caves on the far side of Cloud Peak. You might need to land to see some of them, so be careful. R'lec you are to lead this mission, but heed A'rik. Browns are always steady." The Weyrleader nodded once more and dismissed the men then waved for more klah to be sent to the table. This was going to be a long day.

Some practice? So E'dian did mean to use R'lec to his full potential. It was about time.
The bronze rider took the offered scroll and tucked it carefully under one arm. "J'sian it is then. I'll find him after this and see if he's interested." By that he meant politely telling the other rider he was coming. He was already running over a list of provisions they'd need before the trip. They could hunt while they were out, so there was no worries on that.
"Myneth will send half day reports, unless we find anything unusual, sir." He turned to A'rik. "We'll leave tomorrow at dawn then. The sooner the better, and few people will be up by then." With a final bow to the Weyrleader and a nod to the brownrider, he took his leave. There was a lot to see to before the patrol.
