Claralth had fallen into sleep early, before Kess had even left for dinner. When she returned he was soundly sleeping, eyes whirling even under his lids. She smiled and undressed. The hours that followed were long, sleep was eluding her. It wasn't often that Kess had trouble sleeping. She tossed and turned finally opting to take a walk. She rose and pulled on leggings and a warm shirt. She took a blanket and tip toed out.
The air by the Black Lake was crisp. The warmth of the day remained in the sands. She crossed the shore and settled into a spot atop a dune. Her eyes adjusted to the darkness. With the blanket wrapped around her shoulders she peered across the lake. Small ripples caused by the slight breeze reflected the stars. Her hair hung in her face. She was lost in thought.
Her day had been busy. Up early to bath and oil Clar, then on to chores and lessons. It seemed her life was moving quickly. In the short time since Clar hatched he had grown so much. She couldn't believe her eyes when she looked at him now, he was so big. Likewise all of the weyrling were startling to her. Even with Ravonoths recent scare his girth was staggering.

A dark shape winged over the rim of the Weyr bowl. The world was eerily silent up here, as the noise of the jungles could not reach over the height of Ponaa's mountain top. The dragon's soft wingbeats and muffled snorts could clearly be heard by any in the area. The large blue dragon turned in a circle once, his dark blue form nearly invisible against the night sky. He landed with a soft touch that only the smaller dragon colors could manage.
Anyone around the Weyr could easily identify the midnight blue beast for who he was. After all, who else but J'sian and Alimeth would be out flying at night. They were more often on errands than actually in the Weyr. The rider slid from the dragon's back and Alimeth bent his head down to nose J'sian. A low laugh and spoken words echoed across the lake, although their meaning was lost to any but dragon and rider.
The pair turned and walked the short distance to where Kess sat. J'sian pulled off his helmet and tucked it under one arm. He laid one hand on Alimeth's shoulder, glad at that moment for a smaller dragon. They made for a shorter drop and were much easier to clean. J'sian grinned broadly and nodded to Kess. "Good evening little sister."

The slow wingbeats roused her from the lull of the rippling water. Her eyes turned to the sky as the shadow of the dragon passed over head. Who could that be, flying in the middle of the night? She wouldn't have to wait long to find out as the dragon and his rider landed not far down the shore. Kess strained her eyes to see the dark figure as it moved toward her. A gleam of blue hide identified the pair as J'sain and he blue Alimeth. Kess grinned. Of the riders in Alpha wing, J'sain was probably one of the more enjoyable.
She dug her toes into the sand and hugged the blanked about her shoulders. The breeze though light, was cutting. Once the pair was near enough she rose to her feet in respect. She grinned. "Good evening to you as well Wingrider." She nodded to the dragon as well. "Its a pleasant night isn't it?" She breathed in the fresh, air which had been most of the original reason for her venture out.

The darkly skinned bluerider tilted his head upwards to stare at the stars far above. Yes, it was a very nice night. The drier season was nice for sky watching, the rainy season was simply far too cloudy for anyone to do any sort of decent stargazing. J'sian let out a long breath then nodded. "A very nice night indeed."
He looked back to the Weyrling with a smile growing on his lips. Behind him, Alimeth shifted to look at the Watch dragon who was still asleep on the rim. He was going to pay for that, should the Weyrleaders find out. J'sian's voice was laden with its usual relaxed drawl, even despite the hours spent flying previously in the day. "Now what are you up to so late, little sister?"
Ceroth is still asleep on the rim. So I noticed, let him sleep for awhile more. The old boy really isn't up to watch. Best to just change the shift. No need to stir the nest. If She finds out, there will be trouble. That's why we do it quietly.
After a few moments, a green could be seen winging her way up to the Watch post and quietly waking the old brown there. J'sian snorted with approval and then looked back to Kess. The only girl to Impress a blue in Ponaa's history. There were records stating that it was possible, but it had never really happened to anyone's knowledge. That was bait that J'sian simply could not ignore.

Silver eyes followed the dark riders gaze to the sky. Its what she enjoyed most about the dry season. The sky became so big and clear. "It almost makes you feel so small." In reality it did make her feel small.
"Now what are you up to so late, little sister?" Kess' eyes shot to the Riders face. "I'm not sure. Thinking I suppose." She grinned, her thoughts always seemed silly when faced with having to voice them. She had always been under the impression that her thoughts would be boring to another, never wanting to both even her cousin with her problems.
Kess watched as the watch dragons were changed over. The old sleepy bronze was releived to sleep in the comfort of his own weyr, and replaced by the young green. Kess couldn't wait until they were old enough to do things like watch duty, not to mention flying in general. She smiled to herself.

J'sian's eyebrows twitched in quiet amusement. She must be thinking hard indeed to be up, he remembered many a day he fell asleep next to his Ali because he was simply too tired to make it farther. Taking care of a baby was a full time job no doubt, of course where they were so young most of what they did was sleep. With an inward chuckle he couldn't wait to see what these kids were like when the Weyrlings really had them hopping about.
He glanced back in the direction of the Green now on watch and stifled a long. The day was beginning to catch up with him. And he really was rather famished, but... well this was more interesting at the moment. "Thinking?" He laughed softly. "I don't remember having time to breath until Alimeth was large enough to fly."
The large blue had been very good at keeping his rider hopping. J'sian couldn't imagine what the riders of the larger colors went through. No way he'd want a big hulking bronze, or even worse a Queen. It amazed him that those beasts ever got clean with their size. "Good thing we've got little guys. Though your lad was as big as those browns in the clutch, or nearly eh?"

"He does have my hands full, though with the amount a sleep he requires I still find the time to slip into my own mind." She grinned. It was true, Claralth required so much care it astounded her. What would she have done with a queen? She shook her head. "I don't think I could have handled a larger dragon. Claralth did indeed match the size of the browns in Aliath's clutch." She blushed a little, one part embarrassment, two parts pride.
Kess felt it, the moment Clar had woken up. He had caught the last of her lines. Yes, I was the largest of the blues, comparable to the brown Niddalath. His comment hit her loudly, so much so that she was certain that even J'sian could have heard it. Kess' eyes grew wide. He was fast asleep when she had left. What could have awoken him? She gave a glance up at J'sain's face. Do not worry, I am fine on my couch. She relaxed a moment. Besides if something does happen, I promise you will be the first to know. Only her dragon would sarcastic.
I am sorry, my manners. Good evening Alimeth, and yours J'sian. Kess' mouth nearly hit the sands. Was this really her near hatchling?

The adult blue took the touch of the hatchling much more calmly than his rider. Of course, Alimeth was used to talking to other dragons all that time, although Weyrlings not so much. He really hadn't had the chance too since he had been one. And the little ones were mostly focused on food or sleep anyway. They were generally poor conversation. His rider however, stared like a herdbeast in front of a hungry dragon.
Alimeth rumbled a quiet, wordless response to the Weyrling. Why wouldn't another dragon not want to talk to his person? He found J'sian very good to talk to and rather assumed Claralth would feel the same. His rider found his poise after a moment and stuttered a response. "Tha, that was him? Even Ali doesn't speak like that with others... Actually... he doesn't speak like that at all."
There was no envy in the older bluerider's voice, only wonder. After all, he would not change his dragon for anything on Pern. I cannot see why you would want to talk to another dragon anyway. The older blue ruffled his wings in a clear draconic opinion of disdain. J'sian simply grinned back at Alimeth and patted his arm. "No my dear, you are more than enough for me. Kess here can keep her young prodigy."

Kess stood stiff, her blanket wrapped loose around her shoulders. Clar had never before spoken so boldly. Yes he had in the past conversed with other dragons, mostly those of his own clutch, but never to another rider. Her face flushed, cheeks turning pink even in the cool night air.
"Tha, that was him? Even Ali doesn't speak like that with others... Actually... he doesn't speak like that at all." Her silver eyes were wide with surprise. Never before had she learned of a dragon speaking to others. It was a first for her and she didn't know how to deal with it. Kess herself was usually quiet and rarely did she speak so forwardly. She gave a nervous smile. "Yeah, that would be Claralth. I'm sorry if he startled you."
She stood awkwardly for a moment. "No my dear, you are more than enough for me. Kess here can keep her young prodigy." Her eyes grew even larger. Had Alimeth been offended by Claralth's outward display? She wasn't sure how to approach the situation. "Please don't take any offense, I don't think he meant anything by speaking so openly." Her words were directed at both the rider and his dragon. No I am sorry, I meant nothing by it. A wave of embarrassment surged through Kess. The small dragon was feeling ashamed for his behavior though he didn't quite understand why.

The older blue dragon tilted his head to look at the small girl in front of him with whirling green eyes. They stood out in the heavy darkness as bright glowing orbs, his rider remained motionless beside him, still leaning on the blue. Alimeth spoke to his rider and both young Claralth after a pause. There is no harm. Watch your tongue young one.
"He's not upset little sister, not really. It is just very odd to hear another dragon's voice in one's head." J'sian quirked a smile, trying to lighten the suddenly heavy mood. She was too young to be so worried about what everyone else thought.
"I can see why he chose such an usual rider. He is a very usual fellow. Your family must be very proud." Of course, why wouldn't they be, their daughter being the first girl in known history to have Impressed a blue. And there was that other girl Impressing a brown, that was unheard of all together. A rather momentous occasion that Hatching was.

Relief swept over her, it emanated both from herself and from Claralth. The dragon relaxed. Will do.
The whole Weyr had been astounded by the recent clutch. With so many males impressing Green and even more impressive was the two girls now riding blue and brown. In her mind, she didn't see the unusualness of it. To her Claralth was her dragon and she was his rider, and it seemed to be the most natural bond possible. She did know her history, she knew it was strange for a blue to chose a female rider, and even more rare for a brown to do so, but several drudges had said the exact same as J'sian was mentioning now. Oh yes was her mother proud of her, and Kess was certain her father would have been as well.
"He is extraordinary, though I'll bet every rider feels that way about their dragon." She smiled softly. "As I'm sure you feel for Alimeth."

At that J'sian had to laugh. Yes indeed, every rider thought their dragon was the best possible dragon on Pern. And why shouldn't they? Each dragon found its perfect match in rider, so it was natural that their partners found their dragon's perfect. "Oh yes, the best way to get on any rider's good side is to compliment their dragon. In any case little sister, should you or your little lad need help, just ask eh?"
It seemed with Alimeth's Search ability, that he was dealing with many more kids than he had since he had lived with his family. Not that it was a bad thing, it was refreshing actually. Though all the skulking about in the jungle got old. And he was sure he hated those little biting flies now more than he ever had in his life, not that he'd ever liked them.

The night was fading quickly, she had been out at the lake for much longer than she had intended. The sun would be up soon and so would Clar, again. "Oh yes, the best way to get on a rider's good side is to compliment their dragon. In any case little sister, should you or your little lad need help, just as eh?" Her silver eyes glanced at the rider. He had been her first contact with an adult rider and dragon pair, aside from the candidate master, and the weyrling master. "I'll keep that in mind." She grinned.
It was a relief to know that other riders, at least some of them, didn't feel uneasy about her impressing a blue. It could have been so easy for them to no approve of it, though what good would that have done. They were all fighting for the same thing in the end. She hugged the blanket around herself. "I think I should be heading back. The sun will be up soon, and that would mean bathtime." She grinned, it was Clar's favorite, getting bathed then oiled. "Have a good rest of your night" She nodded to them both then turned at started her trip back to the weyrling barracks.
