Recruitment: Ayla's advert.
Email: Foxjxa@gmail.com
Character
Name: Neyden
Rank: Candidate
Gender: Male
Age: 21
Origin: Ponaa Hold
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Appearance:
(Todd Lasance was the closest-looking guy I could find)
Nyden is what he would call a "reasonable height", being just over 6” tall. His arms and shoulders are well muscled after turns of hard work, adding some bulk to what would otherwise be a slim frame. His light olive skin was inherited from his mother, along with most of his features, and doesn’t often burn.
His dirty blonde hair is kept to a manageable length, short enough to keep out of his way but long enough to mess with if he gets the urge. His baby sister is the one who trims it, so it’s not unusual for it to be a little uneven even at the best of times. Generally not bothered by his own appearance, and is loathe to spend precious marks on new clothing; he has only a few neutral-toned shirts, a couple pairs of pants and a sturdy jacket to his name.
Despite the frown lines that are slowly creeping up on him, he does have a nice smile – and it would be even better if he showed it off more! His eyes are a light grey, nothing amazing, but they are great for glaring at people. Aside from the occasional beauty spot, some scrapes and light calluses; he bears no remarkable scars or markings.
Personality:
One of the best ways to describe Neyden is simply: self-assured. He knows what he wants and how to get it; disliking putting too much trust in others when he knows he can get the task completed by himself. Thinking of himself as a one-man-team, he prefers working alone and has earned himself a rather ‘snobbish’ reputation as a result.
He holds a great deal of respect for people who he believes have earned their rank. While he doesn’t exactly sing these people’s praises, his behavior towards them is noticeably nicer. However, anyone he does not think has worked "hard enough" to be where they are, often find themselves clashing with the critical young man.
If people do not meet Neyden's rather high standards, he tends to think them inferior and will say as much when provoked. While this may seem harsh, the standards he has set for himself are by no means low. Neyden prides himself on being reliable, responsible, loyal and above all; hard working. As such, he avoids wine like the plague, and makes a habit of getting up out of bed and beginning chores before required to. What he lacks for in friendliness, he makes up for with good, solid work ethic.
Honesty is the best policy with him he doesn’t like to beat about the bush and will often broach sensitive topics with little to no discretion. Once angered, Neyden is hard to calm down and though he usually refrains from making heat-of-the-moment decisions, he can hold a grudge for a very long time.
While Neyden comes off to most as an arrogant brat, to his little sister he means the world, and he knows it. He cares for her more than any other and will do anything to protect her. No matter how hectic his schedule, he will make an effort to see Eyria at least 3 times a 7-day, if not every day. He doesn't like to discuss his family, however, and only a few people are aware of his younger sibling.
Hobbies/Skills:
He is adept at crafting trinkets, and more, out of wood. Anything from small dolls to fancy wardrobes – he’ll give it a go if there’s a good incentive.
Pets:
None, he doesn’t have much spare time.
Family:
Oneydal, deceased – Father, Ponaa Hold
Rien, deceased – Mother, Ponaa Hold
Eyria, 5 – Sister, Ponaa Weyr
??, 19 – Half-sister, Ponaa Hold
History:
Neyden was born to simple holder family in Ponaa, with a woodcrafter for a father and a kitchen worker for a mother. His father, Oneydal, was a gruff man who taught him from a young age that in order to be happy one must “first earn the right to be happy”. This saying was something of a family motto, and Neyden quickly picked it up. He also shared his father’s interest in woodcrafting and was trained in it by him for most of his childhood.
It’s fair to say he lead a pretty uneventful life, right up until he was old enough to understand that his family, more importantly his father, was at the centre of a minor scandal. It only took a few questions here and there to find out the bulk of the problem. It would seem Oneydal had recently discovered that an affair he’d had with a drudge many turns earlier, (only 2 turns after Neyden was born), had resulted in a child – one that had been growing up in the Hold believing she was fatherless the entire time. Several holders were putting pressure on Oneydal to own up to his misdeeds and take the child in as his own, something the man blatantly refused to do.
However the most interesting thing was that Neyden’s mother, Rien, chose to stand by her partner; denying any and all accusations sent his way. With Rein’s help, Oneydal managed to avoid staying in the gossip spotlight for too long, and soon the entire affair seemed to blow over, leaving a confused Neyden behind.
Seeing his father differently from that point on, Neyden chose to retreat into himself rather than talk about his feelings on the matter, even going so far as to try and convince himself that it didn’t happen. The very thought of such dishonesty was something that the young boy was not used to – especially coming from his father! He never sought out his half-sibling and eventually grew so distant from his parents that they rarely talked.
Just after Neyden had gotten past the worst puberty had to offer, his mother fell pregnant. It came as a surprise to everyone, especially Rien as she was getting on in years. The pregnancy went well, but complications during the birth led to Rien’s early death. Devastated by the loss of his wife, Oneydal understandably went into a period of mourning – the unfortunate result being that the new child, Eyria, was fostered out.
Neyden’s own grief was relatively short lived, having grown away from his mother over the previous turns, the loss was not enough to break him as it did Oneydal. When Neyden met his new baby sister for the first time, he was surprised to find that she had inherited their father’s heterochromia, one eye the same shade of gray as Neyden’s, the other a pale blue. There was no mistaking her heritage. Despite the similarity to a man he’d rather not associate with, Neyden found that he actually _liked_ the little pink raisin. It didn’t take long for his visits to her to become a regular thing, as he fell in with the foster family a lot easier than had with his own.
Eyria had reached her second turn when Oneydal passed away, some said from grief - Neyden openly rejected the idea. He decided to take Eyria in himself, and with the help of her previous foster mother, managed to scrape out a living for the two of them.
Once Eyria hit her 5th birthday, Neyden made the common mistake of telling her her present could be "whatever she wanted". And what did Eyria want? To Impress a dragon, of course, and you can't very well do that while living in a Hold. Being the loyal sort, Neyden went to great lengths to find out whether or not it was possible for the two to move to the Weyr; seeing as he'd make roughly the same pitiful amount of marks wherever he went anyway. It only took a couple of months to organise the move, and before long the two siblings set out to live in the last Weyr on Pern.
Color Preference: Anything beginning with "B"...
