The banging on the door had Phathiel scrambling to her daughters side. She moved quickly even as the pounding grew harder more insistant. She knew who it was, what they were here for, and that she couldn't stop them. The only thing she could do, was stop them from hurting her precious daughter. She put her daughter safely in another room protected from HIS sight.
She ran to the door as the pounding got louder. She could let him in, and he'd be easier than if she left the door closed. But if he was drunk... She winced wrapping her arms around herself. It would hurt either way, it was just a measure of how much he would hurt her. She lifted a shaking hand to the door and opened it slowly, almost falling over when he thrust it open by force.
Her heart pounded in a rush as he all but slammed the door and advanced on her. The first hit had her reeling and stumbling her vision wavered before her eyes becoming blurry. He was drunk, she could smell it. The second hit made her hit the floor, and she realized that this would be a bad one. Her ears rang with his cursing, his voice echoing in her mind as he told her how much she was worth, how weak, and useless she was.
He kicked he stomped, and when he pulled her to her feet he only hit her more, all she could do was lift her arms and protect herself as much as she could covering her face which already stung with her hands. It wasn't until consciousness returned that she realized she'd lost it.
The silence in the room was deafening, her head ached, there wasn't a muscle on her that didn't ache. She lay there as he'd left her, but winced as Pharies started to cry in the other room. She began moving, slowly her head pounding with each cry from her daughter. "I'm coming baby.." She said but her voice was weak.
Her legs shook under her as she made her way stumbling slowly to the other room. She leaned against the wall breathing hard as her vision wavered again, she focused on her daughter who was where she'd left her on the blankets and pillows that Phathiel had used to surround her with while she slept safely in the room.
Phathiel dropped to her knees as they gave out and moved to her daughter wrapping an arm around around her. Her voice cracked and she forced herself to whisper to sound soothing. "It's okay baby, I'm here." Phathiel looked Pharies over as she always did whenever he came, but he never seemed to look for Pharies after he'd finished with Phathiel. For that Phathiel was grateful. When Pharies cried louder Phathiel winced. Phathiel tried soothing Pharies again but didn't dare try to lift her fearing she'd drop Pharies with her arms aching and shaking as much as they were.

The past few evenings Phaedon noted had been rather quiet at dinner. Phaelu was too exhausted to come by for dinner, the boys were out, being boys and so it was just himself, Luthiel and Luaethi, the youngest. In fact he had come to realize it had been several sevendays since Phathiel had visisted at all. Being slightly concerned and mostly curious he made it a point to visit his eldest child.
Phaedon had been a somewhat absent father at times and though it was something most Weyrbrats were used to, he felt slightly guilty about it. Often times work interefered too much with family and even Luthiel had said, there were times when he worked too much. Times when he worked to the point that there was nothing else but work. He was a lucky man to have such a great family.
A family that...left doors wide open? The tall man peered into the obviously damaged living space. Had she moved? This couldn't be her place. Wait, he recognized that chair in the corner. What was going on here? He wondered and took in the room. Glow laid across his broad shoulders, tail around his neck. Even as he went to nudge the small Gold's head she woke.
The little one's cries were not to be ignored. His first and only grandchild so far was crying and why? He had plent of cause to worry and rushed to the back room. The long shadow he cast was bigger than the man who had just been there. Though it would make little difference to him the size of the man. The sight before him, left him completely shocked. She was bleeding and she was lucky to be concious the way things seemed.
"Phathiel..." He said softly, holding back tears of concern. The young one in her arms was Pharies, though she at least seemed unharmed. "You need the infirmary come." He slowly reached behind her to give her support, not knowing what to expect from her reaction wise. It was rare in the Weyr for a man to beat a woman but there was always an exception.

The shadow had her head jerking up to see her father. She hadn't expected him to come, not today of all days. Now? Her stomach tightened as her eyes stung, she felt shame wash over her, but fought it down. Not wanting her father to see her weaker than she already was. She watched him her gaze being drawn back to Pharies.
When he spoke she opened her mouth to speak but as he touched her she jerked away the pain from the simple touch making her gasp and tears leap to her eyes. When Pharies wailed again Phathiel looked at her father pleadingly. "Please. Take care of Pharies, I'm afraid to pick her up. I'm afraid to drop her." Though she ached to hold Pharies to sooth her child, Pharies wouldn't calm, and Phathiel blamed herself for her daughters discomfort.
Looking up at her father she had to blink a few times to clear her vision enough to see him. "I won't leave her here, I don't dare carry her." Taking a calming breath Phathiel placed a kiss on Pharies head. "I can try standing by myself.." Blowing out a breath she steeled herself for the pain that would come. He'd beaten her before, but never this severely.
Using the wall to support her, Phathiel got to her feet concentrating hard to try and make her aching muscles obey her command to stand and support her so she could walk with her father. She leaned her back against the wall and blinked again trying to clear her blurry vision. Lifting a hand she swiped the moisture from her eyes.
She knew she was in shock, her mind working frantically as her body screamed at the abuse it had been through and the limit she was pushing it to obey. Having a family with several healers did have it's benefits, she knew she needed to be looked at, but didn't want to go to the infirmary. If he saw her, if he saw she'd been taken care of he'd be angry.

To see her so concerned about what he might say or do made him feel more angry than sad. Not angry at her. No, no, someone had taken advantage of her sweet nature and done this to her. He would not let that go easily. Phaedon was a man of position at the Weyr and not someone to mess with. He nodded and lifted the little one cradling her gently with his large, deft hands.
Carrying the little girl would make it difficult to steady her mother but Phaedon was determined to do just that. "Pharies will be fine. I took good care of you when you were younger. First stop the infirmary then I'm taking Pharies to your mother." Luthiel would also know how to handle the situation. He was not a hard man to like. Most people found he was good tempered despite his stressful position.
Watching her lean against the wall he moved to stand next to her. "Here, sweetheart. Hold on to my arm. I will not let you fall." Phaedon was strong and healthy for his age and though not as fit as a dragonrider he was still in good enough shape to help his young daughter and her child at the same time. Not to mention carrying a Gold firelizard on his shoulders. All of them damsels in distress and he an old man. What could he say or do now that would redeem him for this? As if he were the one who had done this. He sighed.
"No one will harm you at the infirmary and whoever did this will have no chance of seeing you. You are not coming back here. Until you have recovered you and Pharies are staying with your mother and I." Two strong brothers to protect her and himself. Only a complete fool would try to find her there. In the meantime he would gain her trust enough that she would tell him who this man was and he would then be dealt with.

She listened and watched her father he always seemed to know what to do, what to say. Taking his arm she leaned on him using him to support her but trying not to lean too hard so that they remained upright. She looked at her father then at her feet focusing on the movement required to walk without tripping or stumbling. It was serious, her father seemed upset and she could understand, if she'd just discovered Pharies was being hurt she would be upset as well.
Taking a breath she whispered softly trying to alleviate some of his worry over her. "I won't be missing any dinners then will I?" Her gaze lifted to land on the firelizard on his shoulders then back to her feet. "How has she been behaving?" Not just anyone was allowed a firelizard, and Phathiel hadn't seen many of them, which might have been because she'd spent much time doing her job, and taking care of Pharies.
She paused before letting out a sigh, she'd really not wanted her father to know, her family wouldn't be happy. She really was weak, and useless. He was going to leave her at the infirmary? The thought didn't make her comfortable, but the thought of Pharies safely with her mother did comfort her. "Don't you have work today?" She wanted him to talk, to fill the silence, to be distracted enough not to feel the pain each movement caused her.

"Which your mother will be very happy about. It has been so quiet at dinners lately. You know how everyone gets busy doing their own thing. On top of it, I've been absent a bit preparing for the clutch to hatch and keeping an eye on them from a reasonable distance. Nisurath is a very broody Queen." He explained and tried his best to smile for her. She was his daughter, no matter what trouble she was in now.
"I'm trying to find a way to train her to convey messages for me. It would save me time." He added. "Compared to stories I've heard about what menaces they are, she is really well behaved. Of course your mother would never allow bad behavior out of any of you, a firelizard would get even worse treatment from her. Golds are smarter than others too. She catches on quickly.." As he was saying that, Glow dipped her tail into Pharies' hands, causing the young one to giggle.
The firelizard was not afriad of the child and the child unafraid of the firelizard. He should not have been so shocked at the reaction of the Gold toward the child but he had expected the Gold to be standoffish. "Phathiel, your safety and health is more important than my job. If I've put my job first in the past, well I never meant to be that sort of father. You have always been important to me, my first child. I love you. "
Phaedon made sure he was still keeping her steady the infirmary was not far. Luthaedon should be in the infirmary now, he was apprenticing as a healer. He hoped someone in the family would be there so he could take the little one to Luthiel and come back to find Phathiel was well taken care of. He was bound and determined to get her well and then take care of the real problem.

She felt her eyes tear up at her fathers words and she rested her head gently on his shoulder a moment before lifting her head and resuming her concentrated steps. "I love you too papa." She squeezed his arm to emphasize her words. "I never felt neglected as a child, I was merely asking about work to get you to talk." She took a step and let out a loud breath. "I need a distraction, and I know I'm slightly in shock but it's starting to wear off."
She glanced at Pharies as she grasped the firelizards tail. She smiled slightly and winced when it hurt. "At least they get along." Phathiel admired the golds small, yet pretty appearance. What was it like to be a firelizard she wondered silently to herself then looked at her daughter. Nope she wouldn't be a firelizard even if she could, she had her daughter and that's what was important to her. She realized her thoughts were really out there, and chalked it up to being hit in the head more than once.

He smiled, knowing she meant what she said. That Luthiel was a wonderful mother and example for his daughters, he knew. Phaedon had doubted his own parental skills and even now he knew he could have been around more. It took working a lot of long candlemarks to become Master of any craft. Dragon Healing was no different. As long as she did not feel neglected he felt better about it.
"Its alright Phathiel. We're almost there..." He added, still lending her support as much as possible. Phaedon would not leave her in the infirmary if no other family was there. He could not trust any man with his daughter whom she did not completely trust. He was one of those people she trusted and her brothers would be too.
"Glow tells me that the infirmary beds are not like the ones at home." The firelizard could not speak, she simply showed images, sometimes too rapidly to follow along but eventually he usually got the gist of what she wanted to say. "We will get you back to our place as soon as they are done treating you. Your mother would never let you sleep overnight in the infirmary." She was going to be upset. Phaedon knew that she would be very upset. He only hoped she could keep herself contained when she saw her daughter.
With that thought in mind, they rounded the corner with the infirmary only a few paces down the corridor to their right. Almost there, almost there. He repeated this to himself several times. The childs weight with that of her mother was going to wear on him eventually. After all he was not a young man anymore.

Patheil blinked up at her father in confusion. "The beds at home? What's wrong with the beds at home?" She looked toward the infirmary that was now in sight and let out a silent sigh once it was over she would be able to go home, to relax, to not be forced to move around unless it was to stretch her muscles and remind them of their strength. She knew the steps to recovery having seen her father stress them over and over didn't help her in knowing that it wouldn't always be painless.
That was the thing about recovering from something that hurt, it hurt to get better. At the thought of her mother and beds again she resisted a groan. Her mother would not be happy at all, she could only hope her mother wouldn't be loud or overly fussy. At least the infirmary was in view, she hoped her brother was there, she wouldn't be happy being seen by anyone who wasn't family, by anyone who didn't understand. It was shame she felt, and she didn't want to shame her family.
Her shame, she was weak, her shame she couldn't fight back, her families shame, that she had been used by someone. A family was there to make you strong, to protect, she should have told them she realized as she took another step, taking more weight off her father to test her strength in her legs when they wobbled she held fast wanting to remind her muscle that they had supported more weight before. When her knees shook more she leaned on her father again letting out a shaky breath. If she'd told them then maybe they would have been able to make him stop, to what? She wasn't sure what else they could have done.

The last few steps toward the infirmary were the hardest. The shaken, injured young woman leaning on him was losing what little strength she had. Her daughter though light was falling asleep, which made her heavier. Luckily they were there before he lost his strength. “Your brother is here, Phathiel. Lets get you to a bed...” The two men helped her to the bed slowly.
Phaedon stayed for a little while to make sure everything was being done properly. He had been an apprentice healer for turns before becoming a dragon healer and his family had all been healers before him. Perhaps the softer side of him appealed to dragons or maybe he was more empathetic than he thought? In any case it seemed his craft chose him rather than the other way around. Pharies slept soundly in his arms even as he stood to leave.
Taking his daughter's hand in his own he whispered, “I'm taking Pharies to your mother then I'll be back here.” He did not wait for a reply and was reassured by his son that Phathiel would be well looked after. Luthaedon promised not to leave her side which eased Phaedon's mind a great deal. She would be safe, for now. The man who had done this would be punished, though not by himself. The Weyr would not tolerate such behavior. When he found out who this was, he was going to the Weyrleaders.
Phaedon made a quiet exit from the infrimary and headed home. Glow and Pharies were both sleeping which only reminded him that he had no time for the nap he so desperately wanted. There never did seem to be enough time. Even now he had to think of a way to tell Luthiel what had happened that sent their eldest daughter to the infirmary. There would be no consoling her for a time after that. He knew as much from living so long with her. Still she had to know the truth and all of it, as soon as possible.
