Gold Dragons
Gold dragons or Queens are the largest of the dragon types that Kitti Ping developed. They are the only fertile female dragons and are indeed the mothers of the Weyrs. They will only Impress to heterosexual females at Hatching and these women must be of strong will and character, for it is they who will lead. Gold dragons rise to mate maybe twice or three times a year, more often in threadfall. Since the long drought the clutches have been small and Queen eggs uncommon. A gold dragon can be flown by either a bronze or a brown dragon when she rises to mate; however, it is only the mating of a bronze and a gold that will have the chance of producing more bronzes or a coveted Queen egg. In the past clutches have been recorded to range anywhere from 10 to 35 eggs even holding multiple Queen eggs in a single clutch. But since the widespread disease the clutches have only recently gained over the 10 egg mark.
A gold dragon has a fierce personality and a will so powerful that no other dragon will disobey them; they are proud, arrogant and strong. Their size is such that instead of speed, gold dragons have amazing stamina and their size makes them able to glide on thermals for hours on end. Their mating flights are the most spectacular and reach dizzying heights. The Queen dragon is the rarest on Pern and of her 45 dragons there is only one. Their coloration can reach anywhere from almost a butter cream to a bronzed gold and their personalities vary almost as much.
length: 52-60 ft.
wingspan: 70-80 ft.
Bronze Dragons
The Bronze dragons are the largest males in the Weyrs and they can grow almost the size of the Queens. Like gold dragons, they only Impress to heterosexual boys and these young men must be of strong character and will. Every young man dreams of riding one of these magnificent dragons at some point in his life. But only the very lucky and very few actually do, for they are almost as rare as the Queens. They have amazing personalities and are the most intelligent of the dragons. Bronzes are strong and daring but they must be for it is the men who Impress to them who lead the ranks of dragonriders during Threadfall. Bronze riders will become the Weyrleaders and Wingleaders of Pern’s dragons and they are expected to have the will and the intelligence to keep the rest of the population safe.
Like the Queens, they are built for stamina rather than speed and their wing sails are broad. But they are more cunning that the golden dragons and they must be to lead and to catch the Queens when they mate. Their colors can vary anywhere from a green burnished bronze to almost a bright coppery color. At the last recording only four viable bronze males existed in Pern’s last and only Weyr.
length: 46-60 ft.
wingspan: 59-80 ft.
Brown Dragons
The browns are the second largest male dragons of the Weyr and unlike the bronzes they are the truly the port in the storm. Browns are known to be the workhorses of the Weyrs and while smaller than the bronzes and gold dragons, they have even more stamina. It is this fact alone that makes it possible for them to fly Queens. Browns normally only Impress heterosexual males, but the rare deviation has been recorded when a Brown may Impress a homosexual female; however, this occurrence is extremely rare and none exist in the current population of dragons. Brown dragons are truly the level headed thinkers in the Weyrs and their reliability and strength of character earns them the trusted places of Wingseconds and the heads of the Weyrlings in most Weyrs. Their hide ranges anywhere from a light tan to a brown so dark it can be almost black. On Pern currently only five Brown dragons.
length: 38-51 ft.
wingspan: 50-68 ft
Blue Dragons
The Blue dragons are the smallest male type in the Weyrs. They are known to be prim and sensitive and it is this color that most often becomes Search Dragons for they have the aptitude to find youngsters who have the predisposition to become dragonriders. Blues are fast and agile and never last the full length of a fall. They are the most numerous of the dragon males and their hides range anywhere from a light baby blue to and almost midnight black. Blues will bond with almost any type of human, be they bisexual or homosexual males or bisexual or; rarely, homosexual women. A valuable asset during a threadfall, these fast and agile dragons can cover the larger slower types and soar to staggering heights. When a Green dragon rises it is the Blues for the most part that will catch them for they have the speed and agility to stay with the tiny Greens.
length: 31-38 ft.
wingspan: 41-50 ft.
Green Dragons
Greens are the other female variety of the dragons of Pern. They are by far the most numerous, their numbers equaling all of the others combined. Green dragons are not fertile because of the firestone they chew and it is good they are not because regardless of what male mates with a Green she will only lay Green eggs. So if they were fertile all the Weyrs would be up to their eyeballs in them. Greens are the sprinters of the Weyr, by far the fastest and most agile of any dragon type. They are notorious flirts and are known for their drastic mood swings and the colors of their hide ranges anywhere from a light almost minty color to the dark green of forest undergrowth.
While being fast and incredibly agile they have very little stamina and will get switched in and out of threadfall to preserve their strength, but luckily there are enough Greens to make this an easy task. Greens can have the ability to Search but it is not as common as Blues and they will bond with heterosexual, bisexual or homosexual females and either bisexual or homosexual males.
length: 26-31 ft.
wingspan: 34-41 ft
