Character
Name: Phaedon
Rank: Master Dragon Healer
Gender: male
Age: 54
Origin: Ponaa Weyr
Appearance:
(face claim: George Clooney...specific pics tho...)
When one considers the stress of his position it is easy to understand the loss of hair past his temples on either side of his head. Along with the increasing wrinkles found around his eyes and mouth, he has an overabundance of gray hair. HE is a little sad over losing his dark locks for silvery ones but it does not really seem to affect his daily life. His eyes are brown with thick dark lashes around them. His eyebrows, much like his hair are thick and gray. His nose is long and well made, followed by well formed lips and a slightly long chin. His smile reveals two rows of beautiful white teeth.
He is a tall man at about 6 feet 6 inches. Phaedon has one prominent scar from his left thigh running up to his chest. (That story will be found in the history section) While he is not overweight he is also not what one would call fit. Afterall, he is not a dragonrider and has no need for physical prowess. He has quick deft hands and a mind to match. Phaedon’s skin has an olive complexion so that he tans easily and well. His skin is smooth from lotions that he has made for himself. When he is stressed he often messes with his finger nails. Hence they are short from being peeled at and not at all nice to look at.
His physical appearance is often disheveled though not through anyone’s fault but his own. If he could simply learn to match clothing or even take time to buy a nice article of clothing rather than wearing what he has till its so holy that it could be swiss cheese. Often his pace is quick, in part due to his size and partly due to the fact that he is almost always in a rush. He takes great care of himself despite appearances and tries to eat healthy foods.

Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Personality:
Phaedon is a deep person. Openly his emotions are masked though he tries to seem pleasant even when he is in thought. The man is known to be quiet when he is on to some new idea. His intelligence is not to be underestimated. One does not need to ride a dragon to understand the workings of them. He likes listening to sad music and his favorite color is probably gray.
He takes responsibilities seriously. There is a deep seated belief in him of the importance of dragons. Protecting them is to protect Pern, thereby his job to him is as important as that of a rider. He is a hard worker and generally well liked by others of his profession. He gains respect through his new ideas and his ability to teach apprentices. Remarkably he has patience though not so much as his Weyrmate.
As a Master he spends much of his time speaking with the Weyrleader and Weyrlingmaster about ways to protect young dragonets and ways to heal after Threadfall. Much knowledge gets lost over turns of not performing. In some ways he looks forward to more challenging situations than mere Weyrling accidents. As an intellectual he sometimes forgets that not everyone understands dragon biology as much as himself and has to be told to phrase things so that anyone could understand.
He loves his family and is not one to cheat on his weyrmate. He would never have weyrmated if he did not believe that Luthiel was the best thing for him. She is probably the only one that knows what he is thinking before he himself does. Her counsel is the most important to him and though she knows little about the craft she is a very wise and logical person. He prefers spending his nights at home with his family rather than out. He used to have a problem with drinking so he stays away from ales and wines. A mug of klah however is usually very close at hand.
Hobbies/Skills: His specialty is in young dragonets and Hatchlings though he is an excellent surgeon in adult dragons as well. He has an adequate knowledge of dragon diseases. Threadscoring has not been seen in a long time but he has read as much about it as possible. The problem is that no one has experience in healing threadscores not even human healers.
Pets:
Glow- Gold Firelizard. Phaedon had been on his way to scour the Hatching Sands for debris before Nisurath laid her clutch when he came across E'dian looking at a clutch of firelizards hatching. He was eating a redfruit but had let his hand that held it fall slack to his side. Shortly after he found something licking at the juices of the redfruit and realized he was impressing a gold firelizard. The little thing loves Phaedon and tolerates his family. Strangers she is not too sure of. Adept at sending and recieving pictoral messages the Gold may proove more useful with time. Phaedon spends a great deal of time (that he doesn't really have) training her. Well behaved and a little bossy the tiny Queen thinks the other Firelizards are inferior to herself. (And she is probably right!) Glow is often sitting on Phaedon's shoulders.
History:
Phaedon had a normal Weyr childhood. His mother and father had a large family. His father, a Healer insisted that all his sons try to learn healing. His mother took it upon herself to help the girls find something in the Weyr that they could become proficient at. Phaedon was no different from his brothers. He was a quick learner and spent more time studying and less time playing as he grew older. Perhaps it was coincidence, perhaps it was fate but Phaedon’s life became quite different from his brother’s on a Hatching day when he was sixteen.
The dragon Queen, Arizith had laid nine beautiful eggs. Everything was going according to plan. Phaedon was standing because he could and why not? The dragons needed choices anyway. He watched the dragonets hatch and saw the clumsy beasts hurt young people all around him. As a Healer, perhaps he should have helped them but he was more concerned with the poor dragons. He gasped as one dragonet had hurt herself on a shell shard. There was ichor coming from her wing. He walked slowly as she seemed only focused on finding someone to call hers.
Phaedon was not interested in coercing her to be his. He was more intent on stopping the dragon from bleeding. When the green impressed, he told the other boy to keep her there for a moment. Phaedon tore part of his Candidate robe at the bottom and used it to place pressure on the greens unstable leg. “She is bleeding.” The other boy nodded. “You a dragon healer?” The new rider asked a little nervous that his dear one was injured already. A man came up behind the pair. “You are now.” Phaedon’s eyes went wide. Well he had never given much thought to dragon healing.
That evening was a hard one at his home. His father was not too keen on losing an apprentice to another craft. Still he knew that dragon healing was a much harder craft for someone who did not have one himself. How could he communicate with a hurt dragon? His father had other sons so he was convinced after a couple of candlemarks to let his son pursue dragon healing.
Phaedon continued Dragon Healing. His life was centered around talking with Weyrlings and learning about healthy dragons. Injuries were not uncommon in Weyrling training. It sparked his interest that young dragons were fragile in comparison to their older counterparts. Dragon nutrition as a big part of his study as an apprentice since his master was very interested in dragon nutrition. He found it a bit dull but obviously necessary.
Apprenticeship lasted until he was twenty one. It was after becoming a Journeyman that he met Luthiel. Women at the Weyr were often pursued by men for the pleasure of a few nights or less. Luthiel was not a woman to be trifled with. He knew this after their first meeting. He was too young to be settling down, he told himself over and over again. Perhaps he should have listened but he could never have done things differently than he had. When she became pregnant with his child he knew that he should give her what she wanted. Besides he was getting a bit jealous of the other men mooning after her. He was a little selfish in weyrmating so quickly. Lucky for him, Luthiel was an understanding sort. Pregnancy did nothing but make her more wonderful to him. Their first child was the most precious thing in the world to him and with the birth of each consecutive child he felt that feeling over again.
His journeyman turns were spent at Ponaa studying dragonets, Weyrlings and full riders. He tried to set up talks with the Weyrleaders and Weyrlingmaster for more information. Phaedon bothered them until they let him into the records room to find information that he was missing. Quite obviously he was on the hunt for information about Thread scoring. He often had his own hidebound journal with him. The journal contained detailed drawings and descriptions used to describe specific problems or surgeries done on dragons.
He was made Master at about 47 turns old which was fairly young but Dragon Healing is not so large a craft that they have many master crafters. He began to take on apprentices. Right now he has five apprentices who he teaches and drags along with him to meetings. He feels that they need to learn that Dragon Healing requires a lot of communicating with the dragonriders themselves. He teaches his youngest child, a daughter in the privacy of their own home but he hopes to convince the Masters that she is worth giving a try.
Phaedon next step is a meeting with Weyrwoman Gaelle. He would like very much to ask her questions about the day to day of a brooding Queen. All the questions in his head are probably very easy answers for her, save one which seems to be bothering more than just him.
